A chainsaw-wielding man who entered an assisted living center without authorization was shot and killed by Illinois authorities, police say.

Officers with the St. Charles Police Department were dispatched Dec. 1 to River Glen of St. Charles when a shirtless man was attempting to cut down a tree on the property with a chainsaw, according to a news release.

As they were on their way, officers learned the man had entered the building and was confronting residents while still armed with the chainsaw, police said.

WLS reported the man’s path to the building could be seen from the damage done to the trees.

The officers made their way into the building, and the man then tried to use the chainsaw against the authorities, according to police.

When the chainsaw-wielding man continued his attack even after being tased, one of the officers shot him, police said. The man later died at a hospital.

Some residents of the facility were treated for minor injuries, according to the news release.

The investigation has now been turned over to Illinois State Police, local authorities said. River Glen of St. Charles said it is cooperating in the investigation.

“We are deeply grateful for the swift action of our team and law enforcement,” the facility said. “We want to emphasize that our community is secure, and all residents and staff members are safe.”

It’s unclear why the man was on the premises, but River Glen said he was unauthorized.

Police have not publicly released the man’s identity as of Dec. 2.

St. Charles is about a 45-mile drive west from Chicago.
